On arrival in The Bay of Islands you will be met by your Guide and board your transport for your 'Eco-Heritage Trail' of Northland and the Bay of Islands. Your Guide will brief you on the day's events and procedures, before we embark on your trail.

Description: Join us today on an 'Eco-Heritage Trail' of Northland and the 'Bay of Islands'. We travel south toward stopping in 'Kawa Kawa' briefly to view the work of the Austrian artist who built the famous ‘Hunderwasser Toilets’, before carrying on toward ‘Whangarei’ where the activity of the day will be a ‘Cultural Heritage’ visit to one of New Zealand’s most famous battle field’s - 'Ruapekapeka'.  You will see the remnants of this ingeniously ‘engineered fortification’, the ‘trench’ and ‘bunker’ system designed by the ‘Maori Chiefs’ of 1845, which was later adopted by the ‘British Army’ in the ‘First World War’. The context of the battle, including the ‘cunning’ and ‘treachery’ of warfare, are brought to life by your Maori guides. Be informed of the modern journey of “partnership” between the Government and local Tribes in managing the sites ‘conservation’, ‘re-forestation’, and ‘heritage’. Concluding this activity, lunch will be enjoyed before a 'City Sights' tour of Whangarei and surrounds include a gentle 'Kauri canopy walk' where you will come face to face with some of the largest native trees of New Zealand, including the biggest of them all - 'The Kauri'. Your guides will explain the importance of these tree species and the significant role the different native 'flora' and 'fauna' have in protecting these endangered 'giants' of the forest. We make our way back to the Bay of Islands arriving at 'Waitangi' to relish in a guided tour of New Zealand's famous meeting house. A treaty between the Maori and the Europeans was signed some years later in Waitangi, and Northland became known as the 'birthplace of a nation'. The 'Treaty House' stands proudly amidst a vast, peaceful park. Also of interest on the site is a fully carved Maori Meeting House, one of the largest remaining Maori war canoes and a superb visitor centre and gallery. 'Waitangi' is a place that all New Zealanders belong to - it is a 'must see' for any visitor interested in New Zealand's history and culture. Your day has come to an end in the 'Bay of Islands' and we trust that this has enriched and enlightened your understanding of this important region of New Zealand as we make our way back to your Vessel for departure.
